Does anyone else have a problem with Microsoft's attitude here?

OK... starts out with the subheading of “I see monetisation. I can smell it and hear it," says Microsoft COO

That already doesn't set well with me...  Where's the money coming from?  Customers needing Microsoft and partners.

Billions of dollars of opportunities await partners through the products Microsoft has released in the past year and those it plans to launch in the next 12 months, says COO Kevin Turner.

According to Turner, a “frenzy of opportunities” await partners who “monetise” the company’s latest innovations such as Windows Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007, as well as Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008, due out next February.

Microsoft put more than US$20 billion of previous years’ research and development into products released in the last year, says Turner, adding “this is the year that we’re going to monetise that innovation.

“I see monetisation. I can smell it and hear it.”

Vista alone represents a US$300 billion partner opportunity over the next year, says Turner, citing a report by IDC.

Let me understand...  Microsoft (rather, IDC) expects customer spending related to Vista alone to be $300 BILLION in the next year?  And what exactly is the customer getting for all that money?

Turner meanwhile said that Microsoft partners helped attract more than 2.5 million email users from IBM’s Lotus Notes software to Exchange Server, adding the company aims is to take out another four million Notes seats this year.

Turner also promised Microsoft will continue to increase its $7 billion annual investment on software research and development, and that it will make available a “clear software road map”.

OK...  not terribly fond of the Notes quote, but that's business.  But it's nice to hear that they'll get a clearer road map for $7 BILLION a year...

Gravatar Image1 - Tom, let's be serious, shall we? He was giving a speech at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference to a bunch of partners who -- dare I say it? -- make money by providing solutions and services around Microsoft's products. Sorta like what used to happen in the heyday when Lotus had 18,000 business partners building products and solutions on top of Notes. They were...well...monetising the opportunity presented by the software innovations that Lotus had made.

So, telling Microsoft's partners at Microsoft's partner conference that he sees opportunities for monetisation...what would you have him tell them? "We've shipped lots of new products, but I'm here to tell you that we don't anticipate any opportunities for our partners as a result..."

And, on the $7B of software R&D annually...that's more than, I think, the next 5 software companies (including IBM) combined, according to the respective companies' annual reports. That, interestingly, leads to more new product innovations that I guess you'd have partners and customers ignore...

On the road map issue, you've spent years and years, and billions of dollars, changing direction and generally causing rip/replace migrations in your mail strategy. And yes, that's a partner opportunity. Spend millions to keep up with where your software vendor wants you to be. And hope and pray that the next road map won't cost you another million or so in hardware and software upgrades.

Would I expect him to get up there and say "don't sell our products"? No. Would I expect that *someone* in the upper reaches of Microsoft understand the art of public speaking and understanding how your words come across to the public? Yes. It's for sure that Ballmer doesn't...

The tone here is getting the customer to spend money. If all you want is the customer's money, then you've ignored the discussion of how your product can offer benefits and improve the business and success of the customer.

Along the lines of "sign up for our software assurance licensing". We *hope* to deliver a new upgrade in the timeframe we promised so that it's still covered before you have to renew again...
