OK, Dr. Dobb's Journal... Get a clue!

Category Humor
I received this email from the publishers of Dr. Dobb's Journal today...

Dear Thomas,

Don't let your Complimentary subscription to Dr. Dobb's Journal end!

Renew today and we won't ask you again for another year.

We value you as a subscriber and don't want to waste your time. As you
probably know, to continue your Complimentary subscription, you must
complete an updated subscription form each year.  This is the time of
year when we update our subscriber file.

And the subject of this email?

7th Renewal Notice

Wouldn't you sort of think that if I didn't respond to emails 1 through 6, that maybe I wasn't interested in renewing?  And yes, there *were* emails 1 through 6...

Gravatar Image1 - Heh - so that's what that was. I deleted it as spam.

Even if I didn't, that subject is spam filter bait.

They should include the company name or something, I assume many others did the same thing....

Gravatar Image2 - Trust me, I know how this goes. I decided I didn't want to re-up for Network World, and I keep getting it, TWO YEARS after it was supposed to expire. Every issue has a FINAL ISSUE on it... If they can continue sending it that long, they don't need me to fill out a survey every six months

Gravatar Image3 - Dr. Dobbs Journal still publishes? I have not seen an issue in years. Nostalgia is setting in.

Gravatar Image4 - Pretty much... I'm not really sure how I got on their list to begin with, as I definitely never paid out any money for a subscription. Most of the material didn't pertain directly to what I do, and I've got far too much other reading material to go through a magazine that doesn't do anything for me.

Gravatar Image5 - Once those little spam engines are tuned all they have to do is forget they're turned on until you respond.

Not quite as bad as having your virus protection vendor spamming you (and all the not-so-nice hackers of the world) that your virus protection has expired.

Gravatar Image6 - I got mine yesterday, maybe the fifth or sixth. What makes it really funny is an opt-out link at the bottom. It's really sad when you send so many renewal offers that you need to include an opt-out link.

The only column that was relevant to me, Chaos Manor, suddenly disappeared, so I stopped renewing.

The other columns were interesting, but had no relevance to my work as a Notes developer. Is that why you stopped renewing?

Gravatar Image7 - Dr. Dobbs used to have a free subscription which required your email address, and periodically they sent promotions. By signing up, I agreed to those terms -- fine.

They still rent their email list even though the magazine is now DEFUNCT. Adding insult to injury, they do not respect unsubscribe requests (I have documented the last several attempts spanning several months).

This meets the definition of unsolicited bulk email, so just report them to spamcop and uribl.com.

Gravatar Image8 - Oh, the irony... if you Google on Dr. Dobbs and spam, their website has articles on the problems of sites which do not respect unsubscribe.

If you try to email one of the Dr. Dobbs Online editors, you get an Undeliverable. Apparently the way they relay email internally is incompatible with their DNS SPF record, so ALL email to them gets lost. Lovely.
