Live 8... Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest...

Category Everything Else

How can we as a society say we care about hunger and poverty, when we support "competitive eating circuits"?

The ability to stuff 50+ hot dogs into your body in 12 minutes is *not* a sport.  You may "train" for it, but it's not a sport, and you are not an athlete.  Add in the other "champions" like donut eating champs, hard boiled egg eating champs, sweet corn eating champs...

*Sweet corn eating champs*...  that's a claim to fame???

I'm still convinced that people who do this have a moral, ethical issue...

Gravatar Image1 - It's actually worse than that, Gregg... ESPN *covered* the contest live on the 4th. 9 am Pacific, noon Eastern. Complete with short bio pieces on the major competitors. The announcers were hyping it like some blockbuster championship fight. I'm inclined to think it was all done a little tongue-in-cheek to be so over the top. At least I hope so... If not, television coverage of an event has reached a new low.

Gravatar Image2 - I guess that if SportsCenter reports on it, it must be a "sport." Not kidding, last night they closed with the Nathan contest. As luck would have it, I read your post and then saw the report. I couldn't believe that it is "news." And on ESPN, even. As the anchors were actually trying to consume hot dogs on the air. There was NOTHING else that could have filled the time? Unbelievable. I agree with you on this one.
