Interesting article from Peter Coffee in eWeek:  Offshore Coding Myth

Cheaper doesn't always translate to better, and US programmers are not lazy coders who just don't care.

Gravatar Image1 - This is so true. We have the same situation in the UK and I have yet to see an offshoring which has turned out better or even cheaper in the end.

Often the decision to outsource is taken by some senior management who have no concept of what developers do and what value they add but from the balance sheet they look like they cost a lot. By the time that the foolhardiness of the decision is realised, more often than not the management who took it have already moved on. They never think more than 2 years into the future whereas we have to think in slightly longer terms than that.

In terms of quality often the different location becomes an overriding factor. When the developers are not in the same place as the analysts or users things become an order of magnitude harder to deliver a quality product.

Overall I am hoping that offshoring is just a phase which we'll get through pretty quickly.
