Comcast wants to buy Disney...

Comcast Makes $66B Bid For Disney

Ok...  I understand that things change...  I understand that business is business, and you do what you need to do to make yourself stronger.  But *anyone* buying Disney is just *wrong*.

Yeah, I'm a Mouse fan.  We've dumped a ton of money at the Disney doors over the years.  It's been a place of fond memories for our family.  And I know that Comcast wouldn't spin off the theme parks to Universal (would they?)...  But to see an icon of American culture be taken over by an outside entity...

Old Walt must be spinning in his grave right about now...

Gravatar Image1 - you don't think walt started spinning when Disney started releasing rated R movies eons ago?

not to shatter your illusion, but its not that "pure" of a company.

of course, no mega-corp really is, either.

Gravatar Image2 - I haven't dropped much money on the doorsteps of Disney, but I too feel that another company buying them is just strange and perhaps wrong. But I guess this world is all about mergers and aquisitions. It truly would be the end of a long history, pure or not.

Gravatar Image3 - So that Disney can suck as bad a COMCAST?
It has taking ten hours just to transmit this over my high-speed internet connection. What a joke!

Gravatar Image4 - yeah, i was just giving you a hard time. my wife and i took our first trip to disney in christmas 2002, and we had a pretty good time, although after a while the crowds started getting to me.

i really enjoy your blog, btw, keep up the good work.

Gravatar Image5 - My Disney story...

Growing up in SoCal, I apparently went to Disneyland a lot growing up. Mostly before I could form coherent memories of it. My most vivid memory of D-land was the time we stayed in a hotel right across the street from the park but didn't actually go there. I must have been five at the time. Rather traumatic!

When my wife and I got married in '82, she decided we needed to go see DisneyWorld in Florida. I was against it on cost reasons, but I gave in. It's never been the same since. That was in '83 or '84. We took the kids for the first time when they were 6 and 4 (in '92). On average, we go back every 18 - 24 months (not counting my annual trips to Lotusphere!).

For us, the Disney experience is more than "just" a vacation. It's central to what we've experienced as a family over the years. We can't go into any park without the "remember when's" kicking in. Even when I visit a park on my own at Lotusphere, I keep thinking it's not quite right as the wife and kids are not there to share it with.

For those who are Disney fans, no further explanation is necessary. For those who don't "get" Disney, no further explanation is possible...

Gravatar Image6 - Point well taken, Marcus... Having worked for Enron, I understand the difference between the way the public perceives the company and what's it's like to actually work there. Although standards have slipped somewhat recently, it still amazes me what Disney can pull off on a consistent basis. Regardless of what/how the employees are treated, they still make our visits "magical" each time we're there.

And I'm sure Walt didn't have R-rated in mind for his studios, either...
