Microsoft must be desperate... They're interested in me!

Category Microsoft

... or at least some reasonable facsimile thereof...  How many other Notes/Domino bloggers got contacted with the following email?

I suppose I should feel somewhat honored to be noticed, but I just find this funny.  You wonder how much of a threat Lotus is to Microsoft?  Here's your answer.

And no, I'm not interested.

Hi Thomas,

I am <name removed>, recruiter at Microsoft. I came across your contact info on the internet and although I don’t have any detailed information about your background, it seems that you travel in the circles that would warrant a closer look at your skills and experience to see if we might have something that would appeal to you or to someone you know.

Right now I am looking for 3 high level individuals (who can be based anywhere in the US and even abroad) who have the opportunity of getting trained in Microsoft Exchange Ranger status (of which there are about 60 professionals worldwide). Here is some additional info on those roles. In addition to this role, I have several other roles ranging from development, to test to marketing. Please let me know if you would like to discuss these opportunities further or if you know of anyone who may want to discuss them with me. A good place to start would be to see a profile or resume of anyone interested. Thanks for your time in looking over this info and passing it along to anyone you feel it might be a fit for:

Gravatar Image1 - If I were the technology slut I was in the late 90's, I'd be up for it. Wasn't this what Y2K was about? Make all the money you can preying on the fears of others in the IT field?

To add to this fun, Radicati has a new paper out. I think they make money just by writing inflamatory BS and then charging the companies they wrote about a pant load of money to read what they said. Sounds like abusiness model Dogbert would come up with. Their whole judging of a product's worth by how many seats are out there is just ridiculous http://www.mikeschubert.com/archives/2005/08/silly_technolog.html

Gravatar Image2 - I love it! Anything that has "Expert who flies in, saves the day" and "Ranger" in the job description seems hard to take seriously.

If they promised a cool suit, power-gauntlets, flight boots and mini computer brain partner integrated into the helmet then I'M IN!

Gravatar Image3 - Ho ho ho. A "Ranger". Do you get a free hat ? A six-shooter ?

I guess its better than being called an "MS Exchange Cowboy"...

Gravatar Image4 - Tell some of my buddies over in Iraq you're making fun of the "Ranger" moniker -- see what kind of replies (and advice) they offer!

In spite of the prospect of a very good-looking UI in Hannover, it still looks like it falls years behind modern interfaces and will still be (in my mind, anyway) the tortoise on the performance track. If what I'm seeing from Redmond is any indication of what's to come from M$, and in spite of being a diehard Notes Developer myself, I'll most likely end up doing a lot more M$ development than Big Blue development -- right now the split is about 80/20 and growing towards the west...

Furthermore, if the "looks & hooks" of Vista carry over into any of their future collaboration efforts then I honestly feel we (as Notes/Other IBM/Lotus Technology developers) will be left asking WTF? when they (M$) take over the rest of the free world as we know it...

Gravatar Image5 - that is the most insulting job title i have ever heard. i'd rather be called, i don't know, Sanitation Specialist than Exchange Ranger. i mean, "Ranger"? c'mon. how can that be anything other than demeaning, demoralizing, patronizing and just plain dumb. it's like they are recruiting kids to go on the Barney show or something.

recruiters.

Gravatar Image6 - @1 - Accroding to Bruce's picture, that would be Boo-Boo. "Hey, Boo-Boo, how about we migrate some Exchange shops to Domino?"

Gravatar Image7 - Geez. If I get that one "note" out of the system and all it says is "Be sure to drink your Ovaltine"... grrrr.

Gravatar Image8 - If you become a ranger I just want to know who becomes your sidekick?

Gravatar Image9 - "The Lotus Note Migration Team is looking for..."

All that work just to get one note out of the database? Must be some SERIOUS stuff they got there... Myself, I would have just printed it and retyped it?

Gravatar Image10 - Went through the Ranger program. It's tough. 6 weeks of 16 hour days including weekends. I felt like the high school star who had just taken Physics at MIT. The other guys were CCIEs, Microsoft PSS support for Exchange, etc. The focus was on consulting in a political nightmare, which most AD/Exchange migrations are...

I was also a Lotus Notes Principal Messaging Consultant for 4 and 5. Nothing comparable. I switched gears because I saw the writing on the wall - not being religious, just capitalist .

If you do "run into" an Exchange Ranger, he will be very tough, is guaranteed to know his stuff, and has 60 buddies and the full force of the 8000-lb gorilla named MSFT behind him. Not sure about the beret, though . If you're curious about the program, let me know.

Regards,
Matt

Gravatar Image12 - Ah come on guys, lighten up. You do know that a secret decoder ring is part of the compensation package, don't you?

Gravatar Image13 - My son just passed this program and became the 75th "Exchange Ranger" in the world.
Of an international class of 15, he was the only one who passed both the technical and oral testing. The oral testing is the more difficult of the two.
He said that not to even try for this unless you have a good consulting background.
No beret, but he thinks he will get a hand tailored leather jacket from Redmond
Proud Mom

Gravatar Image14 - Oh myyyy. I can hear the song now "....I'm a Ranger, Mail Exchanger, oh my darlin' Clementiiiiine...." (sung with a Quick-Draw McGraw accent). One would need to boot up the server wearing anti-static spurs that go jingle-jangle-jingle.

Those Redmond HR guys are just wacky! I'm staying the Domino course. Receiving the letter is a nice compliment though.

Cheers all,

-Matt

Gravatar Image15 - Hah.. I wonder if Ray also received an e-mail like this.

zum kotsen !
