Bonds done for season? I think he's done for good...

Category Everything Else

Barry Bonds underwent knee surgery in the off-season to repair some damage, and then "reinjured" it when he accidently hit it against a table or something.  The MRI showed more tears, so he went back in for a second operation.  Now he's telling the press he may be out until mid-season or perhaps for the entire season.

If you ask me, I think you've seen the last home run by Barry Bonds.  I think he's done, and will announce his retirement before he ever plays another game.

Let's face it...  He's taken steroids, either knowingly or (wink, wink) unknowningly.  The public image of baseball has taken a beating over the last year with all the steroid talk, the congressional hearings, etc.  As he approaches the most revered record in baseball, there's no way he'll be able to get the record without the stigma of having "cheated" his way to the top.  So, given the current climate in baseball, how can he salvage his reputation in the public eye, assuming he even cares?

Quit now.  Claim a permanent injury, claim old age, leave everyone wondering "what could have been" by walking away from the game while you're third on the list of all-time homers.  Everyone knows if you played one more season, you'd eclipse Ruth.  Two more, and you'd probably knock off Aaron.  But just as Aaron never really got the respect that Ruth had, Bonds will probably never get the respect that Ruth OR Aaron ended up with...   Too much controversy.

So remember...  you read it here first...  Bonds is done with baseball.

Gravatar Image1 - Did you see the casual interview ESPN did on Bonds this week with his son by his side? Bonds was a broken, sulking man. He's never been a darling to the media. I think he's a spoiled brat. It makes me nuts when athletes, that have a God given talent, whine about their problems or screw up with drugs or breaking the law. I can understand his frustration about the injuries, but he's whining because the media's picking on him. Which means, the media will just pick on him more to get the reaction. I was a big fan of Bonds Sr.
I don't remember him being such a baby. Ken Griffey Jr. is a spoiled baby too. They take their success for granted because they grew up in baseball.
I agree with you. Retire.

Gravatar Image2 - I couldn't agree more. When I first heard the news about his injury, I wonderd the exact same thing you are speaking of.

The easiest way for Bonds to limit the discussion of his steroid use -- now and for the rest of his life -- would be to do exactly what you say. Even if he does play again, I'd be surprised if he ever got that 745th.

At this point, the only "juicer" I have ANY respect for is Giambi (and even that is limited). They have destroyed any ability to fairly judge ANYTHING that has happened in baseball for the last 10-15 years and that is unfortunate.

I can say the one thing this has made me realize... is that Pete Rose SHOULD be in the hall of fame. Mark McGuire and Barry Bonds should NOT. Sheesh... I can only imagine what Bobby Bonds would be thinking were he alive.

Gravatar Image3 - I know what you mean, Curt... I didn't see the interview, as I've been watching less ESPN lately (for some unknown reason). But you're right. That type of attitude just elicts more of the same from the press.

The more I think about this "injury", the more I see this as the perfect way out for him. In addition to the original reasons, it also addresses the question as to why he got "smaller" after retirement. It's always been stated that Bonds works out harder than most players, and that's why he gained as much muscle mass as he did. Now if he's injured and retires, he'll "shrink" because he's not working out much any more. Has nothing to do with those "supplements" he's also not taking any more...
